| Injured, bruised, broken or even torn off fingers because of doors
slamming shut. Every year more than 40.000 children in the UK and 7000
children in the Netherlands visit the Accident and Emergency
departmentfor treatment of these injuries.
However, the real amount of finger injuries is much higher than
reported by the Council for Consumers and Safety. Most cases of finger
injuries occurred in the children`s own homes or in school. This is the
reason that Arte Viva is introducing a newly-patented invention - the
Finger Alert. With this transparent strip which narrows the crack
between the door and doorjamb, trapped fingers will become a thing of
the past.
 In Holland alone 10,000 victims of all ages visited A and E for
treatment of injuries to their fingers in 1998.
The majority of these victims were younger than 15 years old, more
than half of them aged between 1and 4. Digits becoming trapped in the
gap between the door and the jamb cause injuries. Most of the injuries
occur to the fingers; 78%, followed by the hand: 7% and then the foot:
4%. An open wound to the fingers is the most frequently occurring
injury (34%). Most incidents occur in the home as children play, but
also happen often in nurseries and schools.
These are reasons enough for Arte Viva to search for a safe and
structural solution for this problem. The Finger Alert is the result of
this search. This product prevents injuries caused by fingers being
jammed between the door and the jamb resulting in a safer environment
for children.
The Finger Alert is easy to install in nearly all types of doors.
It consists of 2 transparent strips 1.2 meters long. On both sides of
the strip is a 12mm thick strong Tesa tape and a cutaway for nailing
the strip to the doorjamb if required. In a vertical position, the
strip covers the entire gap between the door and doorjamb preventing
fingers or hands being jammed. Furthermore the flexibility of the
strips ensures that their lifespan is extended
